Assignment #2- Proposal

My final project will have 6 completed images edited down from at least 20 images.  I will use a digital camera to make inkjet prints on 13x19 paper.  The images will be completely absent of people and focus specifically on the architecture.  These images will be captured in the downtown streets of Milwaukee.  An artist that is influencing me is Zarina Bhimji whose images ask for a contemplation of absence.  The audience is asked to consider what is published in history books and what becomes a shameful past that gets swept under the rug.  Ignoring a past, even when unflattering, only hinders a progressive future.  My work will show the city in its current state with the buildings that once were brothels previously.  These designated buildings will be physically erased from the image.  This process will consist of me rubbing away the surface of the print leaving a nasty scar.  The abrupt action of this erasure will ask the audience to consider what they know about the city they live in and what is hidden.
